How to Set Up an Adjustable Ball Mount for Level Trailer Towing

Silver ONLTCO adjustable dual-ball mount with keys

An adjustable ball mount can help match one tow vehicle to trailers with different coupler heights. The goal is not simply to make the connection—it is to keep the trailer as level as practical while staying within every component's rated capacity.

Measure before selecting a rise or drop

  1. Park the tow vehicle and trailer on firm, level ground.
  2. Measure from the ground to the top inside edge of the vehicle's receiver opening.
  3. Level the trailer and measure from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler.
  4. Compare the two measurements to estimate the rise or drop needed.

Actual loaded height can change with cargo, suspension and tongue weight, so recheck the setup after loading.

Match the hitch ball to the coupler

The hitch ball diameter must match the size marked on the trailer coupler. Also confirm the ball, mount, receiver and coupler ratings. Never assume that a larger-looking component automatically has a higher usable capacity.

Install and secure the mount

Insert the shank fully into the receiver, align the pin holes and install the correct hitch pin and retaining clip or lock. Set the adjustable platform to the measured rise or drop position and tighten or secure all hardware according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Run a complete pre-trip check

  • The trailer is level or close to level when loaded.
  • The coupler is fully seated and latched.
  • Safety chains are crossed under the coupler and have enough turning clearance.
  • The breakaway cable is connected independently and will not drag.
  • Trailer lights and brakes operate correctly.
  • All pins, clips, locks and fasteners are present and secure.

Reinspect regularly

Road vibration, weather and repeated coupling can loosen or wear towing components. Inspect the mount, ball, receiver and fasteners before each trip and after any impact or unusual movement.
